Who’s Watching Your Roost?

Home break-ins. It’s probably every homeowners biggest fear. Do you ever find yourself wondering if someone is watching?

According to Ooma, a home phone & security company, 16% of Americans have experienced a home break-in. Whether it’s pranks by neighborhood kids or a legit burglar, your home can be a target regardless of where you live. And there are a plethora of reasons why you could be targeted, but here are the top five listed in order of percent-cause of break-in.

1. Your Neighborhood – 24%

Nearly 1/4 of all American homes are at risk simply based on the neighborhood the home is in. It can even be the surrounding neighborhoods.

2. No Alarm System – 16%

Not having an alarm system is the second leading cause of break-ins. Even if you don’t have an alarm system, putting a sign by your door saying you do helps thwart would-be vandals. If you do have an alarm but no sign, get one.

3. Unlocked Doors – 14%

The bygone days of never locking your doors are, well, gone. While only 14% of Americans claim an unlocked door was the cause of their break-in, a whopping 42% leave doors unlocked. What?

4. Open Windows – 8%

Never, ever leave ground floor level windows unlocked when you are away or sleeping. If you do lock your door, then the next thing a burglar will try is the window.

5. Living in an Apartment Building – 7%

Multiple unit dwellings are often thought to be less of a target for burglary, however it turns out to be the opposite. With many people in and out of these dwellings, it’s hard to keep up with who should be there and who should not. They are an invitation for strangers to scope out. Try to find buildings with locked exterior doors to help up the security level.

A Tip from Roost Home Watch

Even if you do have an alarm system, it’s a good idea to purchase timers for interior and exterior lights to cycle on and off periodically to give the sense the home is occupied. Using a home watch service while away from your home, like Roost Home Watch, provides a sense of security because of the inherent nature of the home watch visit. Picking up newspapers & mail, moving trash bins in & out, physically inspecting doors & windows, and much more default items in our service.
