Often, people who start new businesses do so with little or no business experience and no strategic plan for growth.

They have an idea or something they enjoy doing and someone says to them, “Hey, you should start a business doing that.” Unfortunately, they don’t follow that statement up with, “And be prepared for your entire life to change once you do.”

But that’s the reality.

Does life change for better or for worse? Well, that depends on you.

The Power of Referrals in Your Strategic Plan

When I started my first business over 30 years ago, I realized very quickly that I had so much to learn. As a freelance graphic designer with no strategies of business growth in my toolbox, I quickly realized that business wasn’t going to just come to me. The whole concept Kevin Costner had taught us — “Build it and they will come” — was not necessarily true. I’d have to go out and get the business myself.

The problem was that I was a very shy introvert, which made going out and getting business especially intimidating. And that’s when I first discovered the power of referral relationships. To this day, referral relationships are one of my strongest strategies of business growth.

The Strength in Diverse Prospecting Strategies

Along with that, I learned that having multiple methods of prospecting was important — I couldn’t be a one-trick pony. Over the course of time and multiple businesses later, I’ve found many ways of prospecting and discovered specific techniques for networking with prospects, with clients, and even in personal relationships.

Each case requires a little different approach, and if I’m going to grow my business, I need a strategic plan for networking in a way that isn’t overly salesy. Or too passive. There has to be a mixture.

The Mindset That Fuels the Machine

Getting referrals and networking well are both good ways to invest time, but I’ve learned from my mentor Tony Robbins that neither will work without the right mindset. The number one thing I’ve learned from Robbins — and have experienced for myself —is that mindset is 80% of success. 8-0. That’s big! The mechanics of whatever else I do make up the other 20%. Mindset matters.
